Does anyone know how to properly insulate the attic or who to go to and how expensive it is? Is bad insulation the reason for ice dams in your gutters?

the reason for the ice dams is because your heating your attic!!!!! the heat will melt the snow and then freeze on your roof. u need to do 2 things: 1- insulate the floof of your attic only!!! NOT THE RAFTERS. dont insulate in the corners where the gutters on the house are. keep it about a foot from that area. 2- make sure u have plenty of vents in your attic for air flow. ridge vents gable vents turtle vents soffit vents. any and alll will work . it will keep the attic colder so the snow dosent melt. the insulation will keep the house warm but not the attic.

I agree with Dave. You attic should be relatively the same temperature as the outside air.

Do it yourself insulation (like the rolled pink type) is decently inexpensive compared to the cost of heating your attic all winter.

Having a HVAC guy come in will be more expensive, but you will save money on your heating and cooling bill.
