No "free" shuttles run directly from downtown to the strip...You can catch the CAT bus called the Deuce for $2 or if you want to be sneaky you could catch the #108 Paradise bus(Yes, the #108 runs a circle route from McCarran to the downtown transportation center) for $1.25 ask the driver for a transfer then transfer at one of the main cross roads to the strip like Flamingo or Tropicana....

There is only one free way that I know of to get to the strip other than walking or hitching a ride...That would be to catch the Sam's Town shuttle(nice bus) from either the California or Fremont then from Sam's Town taking their shuttle to the strip, Barbary Coast, Harrah's or Tropicana...

you can check out all of the free shuttles in LV at this site
http://www.lasvegasadvisor.com under "VEGAS INFO" >transportation< >free shuttles< all of the hotels/locations and times are listed, and there are several...

If you like, what you could do is ride the free shuttle from Orleans to Barbary Coast, catch the Sam's Town shuttle at BC...Take in the evening show at Sam's Town(Sunset Stampede) 2pm 6pm 8pm 10pm the lasers are more impressive after dark..Then take the Sam's Town shuttle to the California or Fremont, for the Fremont Street Experience...Reverse to get back to Orleans or...You could take the #201 Tropicana East bound, transfer to the #108 Paradise/north to the downtown transportaion center all for $1.25...The Sam's town bus will take longer but you can catch the show, it's free, and Sam's town is an interesting place..

While you're DT don't miss the Golden Nuggets(gold nuggets display). If you're into antiques check out Main Street Station(very cool and interesting place) the mens room has a section of the Berlin wall for one...Maybe the greatest "meal deal" ever in LV is at the Golden Gate, it's .99 shrimp cocktains are world famous...The Vegas Club has quite a sports memorabilia display...

the tuscany suites is a few blocks off the strip. The flamingo is on the strip, and the el cortez is on the outskirts of downtown. the el cortez is really old and away from alot of things. The downtown area is nice, but older. The best place to stay downtown is the golden nugget. All of the hotels are close together and they have freemont street blocked off so you can just walk around, drink, and have a good time. Also, it is more affordable. Staying on the strip is fun, but everything is spread out, alot of people, and very expensive. The flamingo is nice but a little older. It is in the middle of everything which is nice. So it really depends on what you want to do. If you are there and won't really be in the room, downtown is nice, but you will have to get to the strip and back if you go. But if you really are looking for a high class room, stay on the strip somewhere... but beware, the prices can change from week to week and get expensive if something is in town...
