Because of the harsh lighting conditions on stage or filming, a person's face tends to get "washed out..." just a blur with eyeballs, no features whatsoever. (If you want to know what I mean, grab your TV remote, turn the "brightness" all the way up and the "contrast" down until you just see bright shapes instead of faces.) The heavy makeup helps to absorb the light better. In addition, harsh lighting is unkind and will reveal all of a person's flaws. Heavy makeup will even out your skin tone and cover up imperfections. Also, the lights are very hot, and stage makeup is made to withstand harsher conditions and avoid melting.

Performers in regular everyday makeup would look washed out on the stage, under the harsh glare of the lights. Heavier makeup is required in order for them to show up well and be visable to their audience.

they wear heavy makeup because they need their faces to be seen from the audience. If they were to only use "normal life" makeup their faces would only be a blur, with no features. By using the heavy makeup they make their expressions easy for the audience to see

Lights used in these situations are extremely harsh and will completely wash you out. Therefore it is necessary to wear lots and lots of darkened makeup. In theater, it is also hard to see makeup from a distance so doe-eyes are often overdone to emphasize the eyes.

On stage, you're very far away, and the face needs to have more definition.
TV cameras catch every flaw, and you need makeup to even out the skin tone.
