Performers in regular everyday makeup would look washed out on the stage, under the harsh glare of the lights. Heavier makeup is required in order for them to show up well and be visable to their audience.

they wear heavy makeup because they need their faces to be seen from the audience. If they were to only use "normal life" makeup their faces would only be a blur, with no features. By using the heavy makeup they make their expressions easy for the audience to see

Oh from my understanding is due to the BIG lighting that capturing all the artists. If light makeup u can really see their really true colors (Face) will not be as graceful already.
