you let them dig their own graves. i used to stress about "changing people" and trying to get people to be kind to me, and what i have learned is that people like the above described will be how they want to be regardless of what you do. i say take care of you, and let whomever you are dealing with bathe in their own misery.

Certainly don't get emotionally involved. There are people beyond our circle of influence. Don't put yourself on the line. Know that a not-good human is not a good friend, or good to have as a friend. Wish them well, forgive them, and stay away from them if you can.
If, however, they are someone you are compelled to be with or around, (in office/ college), then keep interaction minimal, and let them know through your attitude that you know exactly what they are upto. And then move on.

the easiest way to deal with such persons is to behave properly with them so they can try to copy you.

Firmly,
respectfully,
shortly, seriously - no jokes or stuff as with a friend.
Say as you would a judge, or bank manager, or police officer.
Unsure nature of interaction with this human, so keep all personal questions and answers to hers/his off limits - until you are friendly and know humans nature. (?)
