Iron & Wine
Naked as We Came

She says wake up, it's no use pretending
I'll keep stealing breathing her
Birds are leaving over Autumn's ending
One of us will die inside these arms

Eyes wide open
Naked as we came
One will spread our
Ashes round the yard

She says if I leave before you darling
Don't you waste me in the ground
I lay smiling like our sleeping children
One of us will die inside these arms

Eyes wide open
Naked as we came
One will spread our
Ashes round the yard

I love this song.. I don't know if I am right, but the way I interpret this song is this. I look at this as a love song obviously. The words Naked as we came.. I hear as meaning we leave this world as we came into it. I think mainly the song is a clever use of wonderful imagery to depict peacefulness and love. It does talk of death, but I think it is sang of to depict the phrase, "til death do us part". Its almost as if death will be a good thing as long as they are in each others arms (still in love) when it happens. Thats my take on it. Great question. I knew I loved the song, but never had really analyzed it. I think I'll go have a listen.. Have a great night/ day.
