i don't know what percentage of americans would consciously support a socialist economy, but the jokes already on them... we're not completely capitalist, and if we were it wouldn't be long before the next great depression... people don't know the definitions and the models political scientist have made.... so I will demonstrate....

America
capitalism ----X-------------------------- communism
(this dotted line in between represents socialism)

X marks the spot, that's roughly where we are in this spectrum... personally I'd like to find us somewhere in the middle, but the holier than thou, devout conservatives don't like the idea of socialism because they want to keep all their hard earned money for themselves, understandable, but not very charitable, sociable, or Christian. And you know how liberals are supposedly Godless, so that must make conservatives Godly? HAHAHA! Start acting like it....

100% of those who pay taxes already do support one, in limited scope here in the USA and entire countries in foreign aid, because socialism/communism destroys wealth, it needs labor or natural resources it can consume. Read up on Ludwig Von Mises and Freidrich Von Hayek for starters. Basically captitalism, from the mega conglomerate to the guy peddling eggs from his chickens in the backyard is what creates wealth and opportunity, and that is the way it has always been. "Social justice" is a nice sounding but Utopian dream in reality, no matter how many times they keep repeating the "great experiment" you always end up with a totalitarian state because allowed a choice people will always side with capitalism so long as there is a chance for them to enjoy it's benefits.

Another good question is how many SHOULD support a socialist economy?

90% of our country's wealth is in the hands of the wealthiest 1% of Americans.

My guess is 90%+ Americans would support a socialist economy if the knew what it was, but because the people in power are those richest 1% they control the American people (which, for the most part are not educated).

believe it or not america isn't totally, but mostly, a capitalistic nation. we have many socialist traits like social security medicaid, medicare and other social services. Since its inception, social security has reduced poverty among elderly by 50%. A mixed economy has proven success. the state and private sector are critical for economic achievement which is a keynesian thought.

Uninformed young people and college professors dig socialism. Young people who don't read the newspaper, news magazines, cable news or talk radio are not informed and their opinions do not matter. College students, who are impressed that they are in college, lap up every word of college professors who believe that they must be socialists because that is was "profs" are. No balls. The lazy and inept go for socialism because they want the government to give them the basics so they don't have to work. Communism: Never worked anywhere.
Socialism: Various degrees of working in Scandanavian countries - now under assault from Muslims. Failing fast.
Capitalism: Works wonderfully everywhere. Every citizen has full opportunity to live a life of creativity and generosity.

So, students, take this to your "profs" with their chins up in the air hoping that no one finds out that they really are not very good at what they do.

Your profs can respond on my blog on Yahoo! Better yet, they can invite me to speak before you and debate the prof.

Given the fact we have evolved into a socialist
society, (medicare social security food stamps
pell grants and affirmative action) I would say
the number is about 55%. That is roughly the
percentage of US citizens who work and pay
taxes thus supporting socialism.

Socialism requires higher taxation to support the benefits it would give to all. Eventually, it would cause disparity between the people. Those who "have" would lose interest working hard to just give more to the state, as there would be no incentive to apply oneself to their highest potential.

It sounds nice in principle - on the face of things, but would be a worse alternative than capitalism in the long term.
