In case there's any confusion Saj Mahmood is not the one that wears a turban - that's Monty Panesar - and it's ludicrous to suggest either of them are in the team for racial or political reasons.

Saj is clearly a promising bowler - yes he is erratic at present as many young bowlers are when they first come onto the international scene: Anderson and Harmison are two prime examples of this. Saj is quick, he's taken some wickets - but more importantly he was believed to be able to reverse the ball and so someone who could deputise for the terminally crocked Jones. That's why he's there - Fletch likes to have bowlers with different styles that can fulfill different roles within the attack and so complement each other, making for a balanced side.

If I'm honest, at the moment, I'm far more concerned about Fletcher and Flintoff's judgement in picking Geraint Jones over Reid rather than Mahmood.

There may be many possible reasons for this: -Experience says that some of the excellent spells in county cricket were just flukes and when it comes to international cricket, these same cricketers pail. Selectors may have recognized this and thought that Sajid Mahmood must show more consistency. Therefore, if he does well in more matches, THEN they may call him back -Ryan Sidebottom is an experienced international cricketer. There was a time when his position was sealed. Therefore, the selectors would obviously make him a higher priority because he is more dependable than Mahmood -Finally, but most unlikely, they probably just forgot about him...

He's one of those people that Fletcher says has the right attitude for international cricket. Trescothick and Vaughn were both county plodders before they got picked. I agree that Saj is crap at the moment, but Fletcher has pulled off the trick of making a sh**e player into a test performer before.

He's the best of a bad bunch available to the selectors, Steve.

But when he shines - his bowling can be spot on, albeit unreliably erratic.

He's just gifted S. Aus 57 runs for no wickets off 15.1 overs - says it all really, when you look at the other bowling stats this morning.

I don't get it either. Sajid Mahmood needs to be away from the pressure of international cricket and fix his problems at county cricket level.

I would say it is political, wouldn't you Steve. ? I mean look at how Daryl Hair was vilified for doing his job properly. Pakistan are known cheats, but apparently you are not allowed to say so anymore. I still call a spade a spade, and believe the "Turbanned one" (shows my ignorance, probably not a turban) is in the team, because it would be downright racist not to have him there. The fact that he cant play cricket shouldn't have anything to do with it.. and "crap"...thats a bit harsh, and not politically correct Steve, you will have to tone it down a bit.
