I'm not sure what you mean by avocado seed, do you mean the pit inside? If yes, they grow very well. What you do (if you don't have a green house and only want one plant) take the pit, poke holes in 3 sides (about 1/3 down the way of the pit, large end up) and insert wooden tooth picks. Suspend the pit over a jar of water, just having the end in the water. It will root and when you have good healthy roots plant with the top out of the soil.

I'm not sure what the particulars are but I compost everything (including avocado seeds). Every so often I take my compost out of the bin and dig it into the garden bed no matter what state it's in. One day I looked over my plants and saw this new one I'd never seen before. I thought it was a weed and pulled it up but it turned out to be an avocado sapling! I hastily replanted it but it died off. However the seed has generated another little trunk, it's so cute! So I can't say for certain what conditions the seed needs to germinate but it is possible to get a plant from a seed.

My friend who grew up in California said her mother did it all the time. You put toothpicks in the seed to hold it suspended over a glass of water. Only the bottom of the seed is in the water. When it roots, you can plant it.

I must admit, though, I've never had success with it here in the frozen north. I must have tried three or four times. I'll get a sprout, but then it dies before it leafs out.

Yes it will grow into a tree, but the chances are that the avacodo will not taste as good as the one in the store. You cab akways use the leaves for soup like bay leaves.
