Cows, like all mammals, produce milk to feed their young. We take advantage of this when we milk a cow. The milk supply produced depends on the demand for it. If a calf- or the farmer, take less milk, then less is produced to replace it. After a while, the cow's body quits producing milk all together, and she "dries up" in farmer language. Now if you have a cow in milk production, you milk her twice a day, every day, 7 days a week. At each milking, you try to remove all the milk from the udder. If you do not milk her, she will get extremely uncomfortable, full and irritable. Some will leak out, and eventually her body would absorb the excess. In the meantime, she would be at risk to develop infections and abcesses of the udder, and could even die from them. If she does develop an abcess, milk production in that quadrant (cows have four separate sections in the udder, and four teats, fyi) will stop. It may also not produce milk in that quadrant ever again, and will always be at risk for developing another abcess if she does. A good farmer would never let this happen. He would gradually reduce the amount of milk taken from a cow over a period of weeks until there was very little produced. A cow naturally dries up milk supply before another calf is born, at which point she "freshens" and begins supplying milk again.

I don't have al the answers for ya but this I do know.. First you understand in order to produce milk the cow needs to birth a calf to start the process ?? SAme as your wife or girlfriend has a child and produces milk to feed it.. Most cases nothing real bad will happen if the cow is not milked reguraly twice a day... morning and evening... if this isn't done everyday you will have a very unhappy cow with a full udder and is painful.. The milk may dry and cake in the udder causeing problems but over time the cow will dry up and stop produceing milk in which case she has to be freshened ( birth another calf) to restart the process agin.

Once the cow's lactation system is turned on, it can't just be turned off overnight. Cows are milked twice a day because they produce so much milk. If they are not milked regularily, the udder and teats become overfull, inflamed and they can develop mastitis. The overful udder, plus the inflamation and infection is very painful and serious for the cow.
After a cow calves, milk producers generally milk them for 9 to 10 months, then gradually dry them up before they are bred again

Cows Need To Be Milked

Their Udders (sac) can rupture if it produces too much without getting milked. However, if it produces low amounts of milk, it can and will stop producing milk, over time.

"A neighbour has been allowed to milk the cows to spare them ruptured udders, but squatters took some of the milk and prevented the rest from being refrigerated and taken to market, he says."

Usually cows (Holsteins) are milked twice daily. Just as in humans if they are not milked then they will eventually stop producing.

eventually without milking.....just like a human, the milk ducts will stop working. Or get clogged infected milk ducts.

And besides the cow will be engorged and very uncomfortable.

Why?
