I must admit, this is something I never learned how to do. I always start giggling or in some form give myself away.

I've perfected the art of 'sneaking up' ever since my sister in law decided it'd be hilarious to scare the living the daylights out of me every chance she gets.

I got even... very even.

Sneaking is one of my better skills... Even though I'm 6'3'', 250lbs, I can still move very quietly and very quicky undetected. Here's how...
1. Remember, peoples' vision only wraps to the sides so far, so plan on their line of site. Even things on the very tip can alert them. Imagine there line of sight as a cone and stay out.
2. Walking quietly is tough, but not impossible. Socks do work, but if you're no confident in the steps the sound of them dragging or shuffling can allert the person. When I walk up, I don't tip-toe. This makes your weight sink straight down. Even places that don't usually squeek, might now, since there's more weight resting on it... Move briskly and roll step. Just like when people march. I like to use the blade of my foot to prevent drag all while keeping my weight moving constantly.
3. Confidence. There've been times I've gotten up to the person and at the last minute I thought they saw me, so I aborted. Usually they still jumped, but not to the level that I was intending. So, if you're going for it... go for it.
4. Forget "BOO." Boo is like ouch. Even when we don't get hurt, we'll still say ouch when we get hit or something. So its so instilled in peoples' heads that BOO means scare, that they subconsiencely accept it, and get scarred less... A scream, or yell, with a quick grab or pinch to the sides where people are more sensitive work very well... Avoid going for the neck since people may overreact and turn aggressive, since they might feel threatened, not just startled.

I hope that wasn't too much... I really enjoy scaring people, so I do get carried away. It never gets old.

I told my wife (jokingly of course) that I had secret ninja training as a child. Since we've been married I sneak up on her like Inspector Clousou's man servant on the old Peter Sellers "Pink Panther" movie minus all the judo chops and throws. The result is that she is more alert and cautious when she enters somewhere by herself and if she's alone elsewhere in the house she checks to see if I am padding up behind her for a kiss

Sadly I admidt that I am widely known for sneaking up and scaring people all the time...it's kinda an addiction! Some people are just not cut out for it...but if you are really wanting to and like you said you give yourself away and ruin it...the answer is Will Power and kinda somewhat rollplay! just try to only think of what you are going to do and not about their reaction cause thinking of how they are going to react while your in the act of your prank will probably make you give yourself away!

I do it all the time to my co-workers. We work as janitors in a school, so it easy. I hold on to my keys so they can't hear me coming. It is much more fun when they are vacuuming and they are listening to music with their MP3 players. I just stand in the door of the classroom and they look up and I startled them. They say a few words and then ask what I want.

Bite the inside of your cheeks together, hard to giggle, if there's a little pain,[not hard enough to bleed], then walk quietly, and slowly, Surprised!!!
