If -3 is the quantity that is squared, then -3^2 = 9. The answer would be -4*9 = -36.

If you multiply -4*-3 and THEN square, the result is 12^2 = 144.

It looks like you square -3 and then multiply by -4, based on what you say. In that case the answer is -36.
