he paid the ransom to get a group of shipwrecked men from their master who had bought them from desert people.they had been made slaves,and even without knowing these men he paid for their return.during their ordeal in the desert the captain had a dream in which he saw the man who saved them.his cabin boy was the 12 year old son of his friend.i want to say the man who paid the money was william chesire(spelling).the captain his self i think had 5 children of his own.it was a man and his brother who bought them,the captain agreed that if the money wasn't paid,his new master could cut his throat.

i believe it was early 1800's.i think she saw it on the history channel.she's only 7 years old and loves history but,,not american history.her dream is to meet the Queen.
