It's funny you ask that, because that's exactly how I describe it after living there for four years. The only thing is people really aren't treated like dirt... I've found the people to be very friendly. Everyone there is working towards some goal and there's a lot of mutual respect between residents for whatever you do or whoever you are. In fact, most people there are very creative folks who at some point in their lives have felt like outsiders and think of Hollywood as a place where they "belong" or "fit in" with like minded folks. Most people have an agenda and are constantly schmoozing and people tend to size others up as far as how they can help their career, however a lot of great connections for mutual benefit work out that way. Friday and Saturday nights it seems the best thing people find to do is go "cruising" like in high school... in fact it really reminds me of a high school parking lot as school lets out. The biggest resemblance is most folks there crave attention and it is a big popularity contest, so the same silly behaviors that reward people with attention in high school are very common in Hollywood. It's a strange place, but I loved my time there.

Well, being good-looking is definitely the baseline in Hollywood for major motion picture and TV studios. However, many "outsiders" who began in indies are now in the mainstream. Granted, the majority are men.
