My husband and I are fair baord members, some reg. members voted to no longer allow married couples to serve on the Board of Directors, is this legal? This is a non-profit county fair board, can someone point me in the direction I need to go to get the correct information whether it be good news or bad news. Thank you all for your time.

It is up to the fair board to determine its own bylaws. I can understand why they wanted to reduce your voting block to only one vote (and that is the main reason why they would want to do what they did).

I have seen problems arise in other organizations when family members serve together. Especially, if all the family members have access to the organizations funds.

Sounds like some petty politics going on there and I would call their bluff and say that is discrimination, and seriously question if they think all married couples agree on every issue then they are not dealing with a full deck. I would infer they have someone else in mind for one of your spots. It's all about being the big fish in the small pond, and too many of these small, not-for profit groups, be it a car club or church, get ruined by fascist mindsets. I believe county fairs are vital to rural America and showing those in suburbs and urban areas what country life, and the source of the food they eat, is all about. I'll digress and say that if all these nincompoops so concerned with preventing urban sprawl and loss of "open space" would take their foot off the throat of the American farmer, we might be a nation that could grow enough food to feed ourselves (tonight they said on the news that 35 million Americans go hungry), supply organic based fuels and even export the surplus. Right now we are fast evolving into the pre-potato famine Ireland thing, where food is exported for top dollar and foreign influence leverage, leaving our own citizens going hungry. At least I have my own potato patch.
Oh bottom line, if the fair board accepts GOVERNMENT MONEY then their bylaws are subject to government scrutiny/audit, they can't just make it up on the fly as they go along.

Talk to the District Attorney for your county and see what he/she says about the board's action. Also, you can talk to your own family attorney.
