Ability wise I didn't see much difference. The difference really was temperament. Why else would have Vishy's career peter down? His bro-in-law, Sunny however excelled till the end. A 96 on a crumbling wicket in his last innings. And a glorious 188 against the MCC XI in his last first class match. (A second innings duck too BTW).

Vishy started off well...till everything for him stated going haywire.

Gundappa Vishwanath was a good batsman. He played many fantastic innings comparatively better than Gavaskar. He was an aggressive player, played his all innings with lot of passion. He proved valuable to win match's to Indian team.

Other side Sunil Manohar Gavsakar played a long test career with a frame of mind of consistency. He is an inspiration to youngsters.

I consider Vishwanath the better player as he was more stylish and accomplished batsman as compared to Gavaskar.

May be you want us to tell vis was better other wise you would not put that condition of not considering statistics.
Vis played lot of good innings. If he could turned his 50's to 100 his stat would also be good.
Gav made his 13 centuries against mighty w Indians.
Compare when they both played well. May be vish gets more points here. But if you think about consistency, gav gets more points.
Overall gav is better.
