I am supposed to and many times I do depending on what it is exactly that I am doing with said meats.
I am cook, so it is required by food safety rules to wear gloves and hairnets too.
I have a problem with both gloves and hairnets.
The gloves tend to be too long for my fingers and I end up slicing off the tips and I don't want to have those tips end up in the food I am cooking, so what I do, is... I have a bucket in my sink filled with hot soapy water and I add bleach to it and I wash my hands in that bucket constantly.
As for the hairnets? My hair is soft and the hairnets are always slipping off, I just wear a chefs hat or scarves on my head. Some people I work with have hair that acts like Velcro with the hairnets... lucky for them.

The only way to handle raw meat is to leave the tap running while you are handling it and then wash your hands (and tools, knives, etc.) in super hot water right away before touching anything else. I keep one plastic cutting board just for cutting meat. After I use it, I rinse it and then put it in the dishwasher right away...and then wash my hands in super hot water and lots of soap (regular soap-antibacterial soap contributes to bacterial resistance). Make sure to wash between your fingers! And that's it. That should do and it wont' make you sick and it won't make the bacteria in your house resistant!

OMG does it matter everyone says wash your hands wash your heabds yeah you can do that but guess what removing latex gloves is so much easier beside if your handles a smelly peice of fish or something you can wash them all day and the smell will still be there.

No, but I wash my hands before and after handling. I don't really like the feel of raw meat so I usually use a fork or some utensil to handle it as well.

When you change between meats or sea foods you should wash your hands and any implements involved ,with soap and water.
Never, for instance; chop up chicken on a cutting board then cut a veg with the same knives or on the same cutting board or even touch these vegtables with the same hands.

I'm vegan so I never handle raw meat. The smell and feel of it is so gross. But I constantly was my hand while cooking any way... beta safe than sorry. =0) btw Lapster you dont get malaria from handling raw meat, you get it from infected mosquitoes.

No.. But make sure you have antibacterial soap around because if you handle something right afterwards that you are going to eat raw there could be a problem
