Actually, soccer IS footbal, the real football. So, if soccer becomes the most popular sport in the US, then it will replace that variant of rugby that Americans call "football", take back its real name and justice will be done. But I don't think that this will happen too soon. Let's take baseball, for example: such a boring game, but so enduring. Peace.

Very unlikely. Just like Australia - which has a strong historical ties with rugby and cricket, there is a very strong cultural/sociological attachment to NFL and baseball in the USA.

Whether people is willing to admit to it or not, there is a certain expectation that boys take up the sports that is considered the identifying sport of that nation. Also, the money involved and the media certainly are keeping the "traditional" sports ever so popular.

No, it was not created in the United states nor is it the most popular but I could see it gaining popularity and sitting alongside the 3 other major sports (basketball,baseball,football) and being as popular as them at the most.
