"The species was on the brink of extinction in the USA late in the 20th century, but now has a stable population and is in the process of being removed from the U.S. federal government's list of endangered species."

n 1991, 414 active territories were located. The recovery goal (360) was exceeded. The eagle's state status was upgraded to "threatened" in 1989. Eagles will still receive the same protection as other listed species.

looks like they still care about it:

to be on the safe side call
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service :1 800 344 wild (yes that is the real number)

You need to call your local Animal Control for a referral to someone who will come take it away. Dead eagles are studied for cause of death to determine if there is a threat to them (like DDTwas) . Then they are often stuffed and used for educational purposes. If an eagle died in your area, there are organizations that really need to know about this. Ignore the idiots who advised you to stuff it or pluck feathers, possession of eagle parts is illegal.
EDIT: Isn't it amazing how a simple question about what the right thing to do is can generate such controversy. Doing the right thing has fallen out of favor, and we are surrounded by people who would like to star in "Jackass" but don't have the talent. Why would anyone make a (stupid) joke about this?

You need to inform a Forrest Service Ranger, so he can retrieve the eagle, they are protected species and it is uncommon for a bald eagle just to drop dead like that. It is important to find out what he died of to protect the rest of the eagles.

Calling fish, wildlife and parks is your safest option. If you don't report it and they catch you with it you'll be looking at criminal charges as it is illegal to posses such a bird. If you take it to a taxidermist, they'll likely turn you in. If you through it in your dumpster the garbage man will likely turn it in. If you don't want to report it then get rid of it gangster style and throw it in a river in the middle of the night, but bear in mind that if you get caught doing that you'll likely be treated like a gangster

Possessing any part of an eagle--even one feather--is a felony. Call the nearest office of the US Department of the Interior.

Call the fish and wildlife dept. Do not touch it and unless your a native american living on a reservation DO NOT take any feathers. It is against federal laws to have them. No taxidermist in their right mind (my husband is one) would touch that bird.

Go to a taxidermist and explain to him what happened. Then pay for a stuffed animal! Surprise your friends!

First of all, make sure it's dead by shooting it in its head with a shotgun.
