It seems that the argument is way off course in this Country (U.S.). I don't know of any place in the United States where Gay couples are not allowed to be together, or share their lives together in every way. There are some areas where people deserve all the rights affordable under the Constitution regarding free association, including living will and beneficiary rights. Yet it seems all to often that people have forgotten what the origin of marriage is and why governments have chosen to arbitrate it.
First, Marriage is a religious construct, evolved from Male dominated property rights.
Second, Benefits to a spouse were based on the idea that the woman was the homemaker who's job could only be in the home.
Third, Many churches will offer a union between two loving individuals, and it is their right and their business to do so.
Fourth, Government sanctioned marriage in today's world is archaic. If it is the will of the people through Congress to give out benefits to help raise children, then just give the money to the guardian of the child. Don't try to concoct a formula which defines the nature of free association.
Separation of Church and State
- Let people marry as they wish, let them do so in the name of their God(s), this is a right that people already have.
- Petition the Government to abolish preferential treatment of people engaged in State sanctioned religious activity (marriage)
- Petition the Government to allow free association in regard to the assignment of estate, assignment of living will, and the assignment of power of attorney without challenge on the sole basis of biological relation.
When argued in this way, many opponents of Gay Marriage will drop their opposition. Marriage is not State sanctioned, only the benefits to which it is heir.

It is a common trick of rhetoric, when faced with a question to which you have no good answer, to address something you can answer in the guise of "rephrasing". You ask a Republican how he can continue to support the War in Iraq, and being unable to provide a logical argument, he replies: "You must be one of those Gay loving liberals out to destroy American Values." He can then ignore the actual question and play to the Fundies and Homophobes who are his key constituency. Sad, but a fact of life. Everyone wants to have a good opinion of himself, the best of people do it by working to achieve and excel, the lazy ones do it by tearing others down, and, like it not, ignorance and widespread misinformation have made us easy targets. As Mark Twain once observed, "It's not the things nobody knows that cause problems, it's the things everybody knows that ain't so."

Sadly, I think we're used as a distraction from war, the economy, and the environment.
I could stand to spend a few more years legally single if everyone was concentrating on those issues, believe me. The problem is, real harm gets done to us for diversion, and we have to fight that. As my ex-boyfriend, who is also bi, once said, it's like wanting to go out and be a firefighter, only people keep hiding your helmet and tying knots in your hose.

yes youre absolutely right. people need to mind their own buisness and stop worrying about what their neighbors are doing behind closed doors. i am a xdresser and it is nones buisness but mine and my gfs if people cant accept that then to hell with them. i am sick of having to explain myself and i refuse to apologize for liking what i like. i am the same person whetehr i am in a skirt with heels on or wearing denim jeans and work boots. i enjoy my life as both male and female and my gf accepts me fully, to me that is all that matters. i am so sick of labeling people, people are people we are all different we all like diffeent things. just because two guys or two girls want to be together or just because i like to wear silky clothes and take on a feminine role (including sex w/men or my gf using a toy) it doesn't mean that the whole fabric of society is going to fray. people get overyourselves and just let everyone be who they are regardless of whether you think its normal or not. who know maybe some people think that watching football and drinking beer all day long on sunday is a little strange too
