Because people know that once the ps3 is sold out there probably will be a shortage until after x-mas. They have camped out and bought one of the first ones. They are Raising the price to sell it to those desperate parents/gamers who did not get the first batch. The same thing happened with the X-box 360 it will wear of soon. In short the sellers are taking advantage of you and raising the price

The Xbox 360 has just been voted gadget of the year, and I do feel that the PS3 is being marketed at an inflated price. Also the DVD technology codes are not yet unified - by along way - and I wonder that even if Sony PS use their usual cynical ploy and bring a limited amount out just before xmas (have we all got short memories?) whether there will be as massive a demand as there was for the PS2. So I cannot see them going much above market value.

Its called the law of supply and demand. A lot of people want it and there are not many available. This means that people will have to pay a premium to get it if they were not one of the lucky ones that were able to get it in the store.

Its the same thing as what is going on with the tmx elmo and why people pay so much more over list price for some cars.

people that are waiting in line at the best buys, gamestops, etc are purposely doing that to sell on EBAY. They are selling to 2 to 3 times the retail price, which many people will buy, for many people are desperate to get them.

Because PS3s are in high demand and low in quantity. Instead of waiting in line for 2 days or whatever, lazy people just buy the PS3s off of eBay for a heavily inflated price.

Desperation creates opportunity. There is a limited amount of PS3's and some people just don't know how to wait. They want it right now. So they will pay whatever it takes to get one.

That's why you preorder things. Then it shows up at your house on the release date.

Christamas time is right around the corner and some parents just can't say no to their kids. Also only 400,000 were being released in North America for the opening launch so demand is really high.

the ps3 comes in very limited quantities. In order to get a ps3 for those geeks and nerds that want it so badly, some people do all the waiting in line for days in order to sell it for the people who had money to just buy it from someone else. It's like giving someone money to go in a lunch line for you and buy you lunch

demand u won't be able to get for retail so some will pay that price to be the first on the block to get one

To buy a PS3 would require if not months then years of pre order. Those of us (including me) who didn't pre order now need to buy it from the nice people who sell it on ebay.
