The term originated from the fact that occasionally a black sheep will be born into a herd of white sheep. Black wool is less desirable then white because of it's inability to be dyed. That is why a person who is different from their family in their beliefs or actions is called a 'black sheep'.

That's the person that stands out in a family. Other sheep are white. No racial stuff. Normally sheep are white and the different one or the bad one was black. Ergo blacksheep.

figurative use is supposedly because a real black sheep had wool that could not be dyed and was thus worthless. But one black sheep in a flock was considered good luck by shepherds in Sussex, Somerset, Kent, Derbyshire. Baa Baa Black Sheep nursery rhyme's first known publication is in "Tommy Thumb's Pretty Song Book" (c.1744).

The Black Sheep was the one that was different than the others in the herd. A kid doesn't have to be bad to be a black sheep, in fact the kid may be the good one in an otherwise nasty family.

Shepherds used to keep flocks of all white sheep with a few black sprinkled in. That oddball black sheep helped them keep track of how many sheep were in the field. If the black was missing, they would have lost 10 other white sheep as well.

it means they are totally different. a black sheep would be very hard to find right? that is why they call a family outcast that, because they are really screwed up in comparison to the family
