India is progressing nicely, economically. The only problem is that India lacks infrastructure, which does come under the telecommunications category. India is not too famous for its cars (they are mostly of poor quality, from my experience), India has a pretty good market for electronics. And finally I think that India has sufficient defense, its the fourth largest army in the world. So generally, yes India is self sufficient and has a lot of room for progression. But it can be made better with improved infrastructure, and I think that the time will come when India becomes one of Asia's superpowers in the future.

If the politicians and the Government, do not interfere in the affairs of the Private sector, then we can achieve this goal. But, the sorry state of affairs is that the Government, is poking its nose in their working also, by asking them to reserve the jobs on the basis of the caste. How, then, you can expect, India to become self sufficient?
