Hey, Im a basketball player, I shoot pretty well and my layups are decent but my real talent is in my defence. I get many steals, pass interceptions, and i gaurd my man so well that he doesnt even get to touch the ball. I feel as if im a great help to the team, however the people that score the points tend to be more respected while im working very hard. Is it just me, or my team or is defence in basketball overlooked?

Have you ever noticed that too many egos and superstar players on the same team do not go all the way?

Every team needs role players. What you are doing is of equal importance as scoring. Offense sells tickets-defense wins championships.

Look how many rings Dennis Rodman has from 2 different teams.

If you research the stats the highest rebounding teams usually win it all. The Pistons have won in recent years do to their defense.

You are an equal contributor to your team. Defense doesn't make as many headlines-that I agree on-but just like the lineman in football they are equally important as quarterbacks and running backs though they are not read about in the newspapers.

Keep your head up high!

It is a known fact that defense is sometimes overlooked. Sure, Dwyane Wade may have won the Finals, but do you know who I think helped the Heat most? Haslem's defense of Dirk Nowitzki. He just knows how to defend Dirk and make him miss his shots. At the SA-DAL series last year, San Antonio really didn't have a "Dirk Stopper", that's why they lost.

Anyway, it seems that you work hard on D, and that will pay off. Just look at Bruce Bowen on the Spurs team. Perhaps just like you, average offensive game but superb defensive skills. Sure he can't do circus shots, or make AND1 plays, or have courtvision like Nash, but when it comes to locking down the opponent's best backcourt player he's the best there is. He's now one of the league's most respected defenders. Just keep up what you're doing and your team will win.

Anyway, Im a Spurs fan so I know about this stuff.

If you have a dominating offense in any sport, defense isn't really needed, and it will eventually come.

Just think, if you are driving in and scoring the easy lay-up or shooting the lights out, the other team will be intimidated by your performance, your team will gain momentum and just dominate on both sides of the court, or they won't be able to rack up as many points as your team is.

Yah offence tends to get more attention then defence. That does not mean that it is any more important. Infact defence is probably more important then offence. As a point guard that is kinda hard for me to say, but it is true. I mean without good defencive players on my team my position is worth squat. Don't worry you will be reconised soon! Just keep up the hard work.

hell yeah as most players nowadays only care about how many points they score and their stats and could care less about playing defense as it isn't alot of fun which is why most of these players will never win a championship in their lives
