I've got a 99 Maxima SE, 90K miles. Recently, after driving it for a
little while, my entire instrument panel goes crazy. The speedo might
shoot to 90 and stick, the tach might stick at 3000, or they all might go
to 0. Also the digital odometer stops displaying and stops recording
miles.

Sometimes it comes back after driving a while, usually it doesn't. It
seems to be somewhat related to heat, as it usually doesn't happen in the
morning, it seems to have gotten better as it's gotten cooler, and it
always works after sitting overnight, but just shutting it off and
restarting it doesn't fix it.

i own a repair shop, and i think you have a bad ground wire on it,there are a lot of grounds on this car,and if one of them comes off or gets loose it causes it to act like this especially the ones that have the speed sensors on them, you might want to look under the dash area at the bottom of the steering wheel there is a ground block down there that does come loose some times ,and it causes them to do this,i have repaired a few of them that have done the same thing.if you,ll take your time and look under the dash area, you,ll find it,,good luck,i hope this help,s,,and have a good thanksgiving.

I dont think of its your MAF sensor, yet im no longer too specific. (a code reader wont help too plenty on an OBD-a million motor vehicle with a symptom like that. OBD-a million structures have VERY vast blunders codes.) i broke the MAF sensor on my BMW and became into forced tochronic 2 weeks. My plugs have been given destroyed, my oil became into crammed with gas, i've got been given approximately 5 miles to the gallon, and my cats burned up. while became into the final time the ignition coil became into replaced? The ford 3.8 V6 is customary for head gasket failure as nicely, yet i dont see how in any way its possible for the motor vehicle to run that long with a blown head gasket. attempt smelling the exhaust (i recognize, it sounds loopy), if it smells candy its your head gasket, if it smells like gas your engines working wealthy. i might attempt checking and cleansing some hassle-free areas first. initiate with the injectors, ignition coil, gas pump (verify tension), MAF sensor, O2 sensor and ascertain there arent any frayed or crossed wires. I dont see why it would be the rest. Does it appear like a substantive quantity of MPG and HP are lacking? And, are you able to hold the motor vehicle at a speed (any speed above 50) without sputtering?

i would look for a grounding problem first because it is easiest.
something is expanding and pulling away.
check all your connectors, then after all else look at the circuit board that the instruments sit on. my bet is very careful inspectin will show a small black spot from arcing.
i'd hate to do that and would be willing to spend a couple of hundred for someone else to do all that.
good luck
