As a liberal, I like to use the following example.
Imagine a huge corporation. If they are a typical corporation, the following has happened over the past few years:
1. they reneged on their pension obligations
2. they shifted most or all of the burden of their healthcare plans onto their workers.
3. the CEO took home a paycheck for $100,000,000.
As a liberal, I'd like to see the company say, "hey, before we break the bank for our CEO, let's make sure we are taking care of the employees who are actually assembling, designing, marketing, etc....Let's make sure we provide them healthcare, and aggressively match their 401K's. And if that means our CEO "only" takes home $30 million instead of $100 million, so be it."

Every person holds different beliefs, but I will mention how important human rights are to leftists.
To focus completely on our private family as a closed entity without duty to others etc, is I think actually a human rights violation issue. ....Yes leftists believe in more social programs and taking care of each other with at least minimal respect for each other. But this in no way means raising the taxes of the working people that can not afford to help as much. The rich and wealthy are capable of more expenditure and so we general.y feel tax increases should be carried mostly by them. Of course the rich have ways of using people to get votes so they can hoard money, but that is another subject. Though it should be pointed out that when the rich are buying off politicians, they have no qualms with breaking the working mans back, by cutting off the money for needed services so they can save a million dollars out of the billions they already have.
Aside from human decency towards those within our own country, we also generally fight for the human rights laws to be in-acted and enforced by other counties. For instance we value the Declaration of Human Rights as stated by Amnesty International - and value the Geneva Convention laws. We don't go into the UN etc to try and suspend Humane Rights Laws (like Bolton), but rather reinforce those ethics.
Lastly I will mention that Leftists believe in diversity. People do not need to conform to ONE stereotype to have respect awarded to them. Protection of civil rights and the right to pursue happiness is not just for Christians for example, but for everyone. And even if we disagree with a lifestyle for our personal lives, we will still think of liberty for all first. We would not try to change the constitution and pull bring in a theocracy on America.
There are many other "liberal" values, but these are pretty ingrained in all but the most moderate or centrist.
It gets down right silly to have right winger's defining leftists though. At least the ones that deliberately do not "get it" and/or don't think and make a habit of twisting. For example calling when people are hurting, or disabled, or in need - lazy. It gets really silly. Oh, we value healthy logic as well.

I consider myself a liberal and my values are simple. I am a single mother of 2, and I believe that the system is broken. I do not want a hand out, but I do not feel like the system should punish me for working, which is basically what it does. I think that instead of hand outs, the system should be giving hand ups and helping single mothers such as myself who are showing them that they are trying by working and going to college. I am prochoice. I belive in God. I believe that mothers that do drugs during their pregnancy should be shot. I don't know, I think everyone has a different set of values.

Same as most conservative ones, except we believe in freedom of the mind and body. We value education and progressive thought....we value being healthy and understanding one another. Money is important, but it does not dictate us. Have a good day....

Simple - ensuring that every body's opinion matters and not constricting yourself to a set of believes that puts people down. I think it really boils down to respect for all opinions. (Of everyone who agrees with me...but that is another story or answer!)
