There are 2 products that I'm familiar with made by Talika Paris. The first one is Eyelash Lipocils treatment which helps to grow thicker longer lashes.
One of the places that sells it is Sephora - here's what Sephora says about it:
This unique, transparent gel enriched with a complex of lecithin and 100% natural plant extracts is clinically proven and GUARANTEED TO STIMULATE THE GROWTH OF LASHES as it conditions and beautifies existing lashes.
Use twice a day, morning and evening, after cleansing. Apply to lashes and to the skin at the base of your lashes. Then apply your favorite mascara when it's dry, in just one minute.
The other product by Talika Paris is Lash Extender and here's what Sephora writes about it:
These unique, lightweight, natural looking fibers, provide the illusion of longer, thicker lashes without the bother and mess of artificial lashes and adhesives.
Simply apply your favorite mascara, then brush on Lash Extenders and follow with a second coat of mascara. Want more fullness or length for those special occasions? Just repeat the process. Undetectable and comfortable to wear, they remain in place until you remove your mascara. Contact lens wearers should insert their lenses before applying Lash Extenders.
Sometimes the fibers can get in your eyes, so you need to be careful when applying. Since you don't wear mascara, you could use a clear mascara instead before applying this.

These days you can get eyelash extensions, much different to the bulky DIY falsies you mentioned. They are attached to the individual lash and look 100% natural. You can chose the colour, length and thickness too. visit here for more info: http://www.nouveaucontour3dlashes.co.uk/
woman's webite iVillage tried it, so see their review: http://www.ivillage.co.uk/beauty/makeup/eyes/articles/0,,548142_679714,00.html
The beauty salon Pout also stick professional falsies on for you which last about a week. £20 a time, but a good way to glam up for a special party.
Without professional help, try using a good eyelash curler, and use a white base coat to prime your lashes. Then use a volumising lengthening mascara - I love Maxfactor masterpiece mascara. hope this helps! take care x

You can go and have them tinted. It is the same as dying your hair, you should be able to find a local salon that does it. Also on the more cutting edge of things , you could get lash extentions, I just started doing them and it is a very natural look. I do permanent makeup, so this was just another service to offer. single lashes are added to your own and it lasts up to 2 months.

Buy a heated eyelash curler wand. I got mine on eBay, and just love it. Takes a little practice, not much at all, and helps them show up better. If they're light, you can buy special dye or have them colored professionally.
