I dont know why they do this but it totally pisses me off. The menu should read steak 18.00 plus 2.70 tip! Maybe I would not purchase the steak if I knew that. Kind of like false advertisement. I think I should decide if I want to leave a tip or not and how much I want to leave. If she does a good job I will throw her a bone if not sorry. If she is guaranteed a tip then why would she put the extra effort into accommodating me? lol I just read this and its mean sorry but I feel strongly on this issue.

When it is a big group they don't want to take a chance that you will stiff the server who spent a lot of effort on your table. They add usually 15% so they have some of your money for the servers.
If you thought the service was outstanding you can add more. If you thought the service was terrible you are screwed but probably should complain to the manager anyway so that the lousy server will be on notice and probably not get any tables with large groups again.

From a server's point of view it can be good and bad. Usually it insures that the server will get a tip from the party. But that can backfire because people who don't like the tip being "forced" on them will leave the bare minimum. More often than not, big parties know how to tip well and do. I have had it tacked on in as small as me and one other person while vacationing in areas of the south. I suppose that is because of snowbirds.....and they are always crying poor and don't tip at all.

It is more common for a tip to be added automatically if it's a large party, 8 or more people. It is plainly written in menus, most people just don't look. As said before, it is to ensure that the server is compensated for the time spent on the table.

Thats only if there are like 8 or more people to make sure the waitress gets a fair amount. That table is going to take up time where they could have gotten 2 parties in and out and she would have gotten 2 tips.

Me too! The f'd up thing about it is that 9 times out of 10, they don't even warn you that they are going to do it! I guess they know that they wouldn't be getting any business. The worst part is, the service always sucks. Guess they know that tip's a comin'.

I THINK THEY DO IT TI INSURE THAT THE WAITERS AND WAITRESSES WILL RECEIVE THEIR TIPS.
SOMETIMES PEOPLE STIFF THEM ON TIPS.
WHAT SUCKS ABOUT ADDING THE TIP TO THE BILL IS THAT IF THE SERVICE SUCKS, YOU HAVE TO LEAVE A TIP EVEN IF THEY DON'T DESERVE ONE.
