theres a really good book called "The Dark is Rising" by Susan Cooper. theres actually 4 books in the series, and its got a sort of lord of the rings thing going on, but way less convoluted and set in modern times (i dont mean convoluted in a bad way, but its just plain easier to follow, you dont need to keep notes on a thousand things to keep up with the books, i liked lotr and read all the books way before the movies came out, so dont freak out if thats your favorite series).
if you like things like that, go for it. its more adult than chronicles of narnia, but not as complicated as lord of the rings.

Boy or girl? Boys like Silverwing, sunwing...that whole series, and any other kind of adventure novel. Probably the C.S. Lewis books, too, depending on their ability level. Girls like The Princess Diaries and by extension any novel that is written in form of a diary. I would also suggest "A Bride to Terabithia", "The Black Stallion". "Angus, Thongs, and Full Frontal Snogging"(not at all what it sounds like), the Artemis Fowl series, "The Outsiders", "Shiloh". There are many, many more as well. I have found that if you go into a book store, the people there can usually tell you what kids of different ages are reading these days.
