What is it called when you include a short passage before the beginning of a paper.. for example a quotation that has to do with your topic. And how do you cite it? Can it be smaller then the rest of the text?

an epigraph. An epigraph is usually the quotation your paper is based on, not simply a quote that is related.

It should be the same text/font as the rest of the paper. To cite, use whichever system your instructor told you to, either APA or MLA. I've always been told to use MLA, which would mean, after the epigraph, in parentheses, put the author's name and either the page number, or the section/passage number for citations from the classics like Plato, Descartes, etc.

There's also such a thing as an 'abstract', which is a paragraph before your paper, on it's on page, which is like a pre-summary.
