No matter what kind of rock and roll you think is the best you can't discount the Beatles... They are everything that ever was. I will do it like this:
1960's The Beatles-The Rolling Stones
1970's Led Zeppelin-Black Sabbath
1980's Ozzy Osbourne-AC/DC
1990's Guns N Roses-Metallica
2000's Tool and no one else yet....

That would have to be the Rolling Stones. They helped create rock & roll as you know it today... and they have all the other bands beat hands down on LONGEVITY. No competition really.
Rolling Stones.
(And I am still a huge Beatles fan... their music is what most rock bands now have built on, with chords and rhythm and all.......
but they didn't stay together).
