The easiest way is to check out what's growiing in your neighbourhood that you fancy having in your own garden. Most gardening people are fairly friendly and could probably give you the names and a bit of growing advice to boot. The best thing is the plants you choose thrive in YOUR particular area, and hey it's nice to know more than just your immediate neighbours!

This is a very broad question because there several variables:how much wind do you get, how sandy is your soil. My best suggestion is to look at your neighbors gardens and see what does well for them. Or, go to a local garden center (not a Home Depot or Lowe's) who knows your climate and they can best advise you. Does your area have an Extention agent or a Master Gardener program?

You didn't say how small your garden is but container planting could be an alternative because the pots could be moved if it gets too windy,
