I wouldn't mind bidding on a thing or two on ebay, but i'm not too sure of the security of it all. Are these people trustworty? if so, is there a way to be sure? What is your advice for buying online from these sort of sites?

I have bought hundreds of things on eBay, and I will hardly even think of buying anything elsewhere. I love the convenience of shopping at home, and not having to use a credit card. In the several years I've been an eBay buyer and seller, I've only had a couple of people who screwed me over. That's very good odds.
Watch their feedback! If you see any recent negative comments, read them, and you can pretty much tell if they were deserved or not. If they have anything under 99.0% feedback, I pass them by, and get it from another seller.

Use PayPal !!!! They will get your money back for you if you don't receive the item !!! Very important. The only times I've had a problem is when I sent a check or money order.

eBay does follow up on non-received items or non-paying bidders.... however.... they have a $25.00 deductible on claims.
So if you paid less than that, they WON'T get your money back.
PayPal WILL and DOES get it back for you... ALL of it. Just be sure to file a claim within 45 days. If you SELL on eBay, better be sure to get Delivery Confirmation, so you can prove the item was received by the buyer.

When I decide to buy something on Ebay I look more into the seller. I look at their feedback comments and if they have a perfect score or not. I try to only buy from people who have good feedback. I also look to see how many transactions they have had. If they are a new comer to ebay I am very careful as to how I pay them. Also Ebay is good at taking actions against nonpayers or other problems.

NO. The item has to be hard to find, or a deal thats worth the gamble. Lots of hacked sites, lots of shilling and lots of waiting around for stuff to show up. I Love to sell stuff on Ebay though, but I'm amazed when people risk Ebay to save 10% off the Wal-mart or NewEgg price.

I've been using eBay for a while (both buying and selling) and have not had any major issues with them. Just be careful with dealing with the users (do a bit of research first) before you engage into a transaction

Sending personal information to ebay is safe enough. Read their privacy policy. They are bound by it.

NEVER PAY CASH to any of the merchants, and if they "accidentially" send you a check and want you to reimburse them, its a scam. Report immediately.

Only deal with merchants that have a good ebay reputation.

I have used ebay a lot, including claims and they are reputable. Where I have had many problems is with paypal. They refuse to honor their warranty. My advice is pay any way but paypal.

Ebay, I trust. The buyers and sellers should be judged on thier history. Never send cash!

It's not trust that is the issue, there an no bargains anymore in fact you often end up paying over the odds for things
