Actually since you just bought it, I would estimate you are using socket AM2, of course I would need to know the model number of your computer to be certain. As for the person who said upgrading the hard drive would give you a better performance boost than upgrading the processor, they should not be answering real questions, they don't know what they are talking about to put it frankly. An AMD dual core would give you a nice performance boost. You would be much better off buying one online then in a land based store, you get a better price. Anyway as far as which to upgrade to, I would need to know the model number of your computer so I could ensure compatibility, and how much you are looking to invest in the new processor. If you could email me that info (email in my profile) then I could help you out.

you should have never bought a Compaq, what were you thinking, but that it history now so lets move on. at least your motherboard supports amd. you will have to stick with sempron and I'll check on the fastest they go...
1.8 is the fastest a Sempron Will move but you will need more than a new processor to move fat now you'll need a main board etc....

ur not going to gain hardley anything by doing that... unless ur doing somthing like video converting whole movies and it takes u 2 hours ... then upgrading to a 2ghz will shave a mighty 10 mins off ur time, and thats being optimistic.... for everyday things like surfing the web and using word a faster harddrive or raid will be the single biggest noticeable boost to speed u can do ... the bottom line is the entire machine is going to be a bottleneck to ever getting huge performance increases .. just putting a faster processor in it will most likely not even be noticeable ...

You have to go to the HP/Compaq website and check your model's Product Specifications to see what the max processor your motherboard can handle. Check prices somewhere online like Newegg.

First I would check my motherboard spec's and see what type of board I have you can find that at Compaq.com by searching your model number. then I would try www.tigerdirect.com if it is upgradeable to find a faster processor

check your spec find out what socket you are....just taking a whack it'll be socket 939 ....so if it is ..go for dual core...get the amd 64 X2 3800+ 2.0 GHz or better.......on newegg.com its only 175 ..thats pretty cheap and it is dual core so it'll average around 3.4GHz stock
