We have three chips. A one digit positive whole number is written on each side of each chip. The six numbers used on the chips are consecutive. (they line up like 1 2 3, 4 5 6, 7 8 9)

Tossing the chips once, we get 6, 7, and 8, for a sum of 21. Then we shake and toss them a few more times and get the sums of 16, 17, 20 and 23.

Which number is on the opposite side of number 6? Number 7? Number 8?

The 6 numbers are consecutive and include 6,7, and 8. The only possible other numbers then are 3, 4, 5, and 9.

Look at the toss of 23. Since it is larger than the 6, 7, 8 toss, it must contain a number greater than 8. Therefore 9 is needed. The toss must be 9, 8, 6. No other combination gives 23. So the 7 and 9 are on the same chip.

This also means the other two numbers must be 4 and 5.

The toss of 16 must be made of 4, 5, 7. This add no information.

The toss of 17 can be

4, 5, 8 - This one is not possible since the 7-9 chip is missing.
4, 6, 7

So 4 must be on the 8 chip to have all 3 chips in the toss. This gives the 3 chips: 5/6, 4/8, 7/9.

The 20 roll is possible with 5, 7, 8 so it all checks out.

Ok, it should be :
6+5; 7+9; and 8+4

so, 16 = 4+5+7
17= 4+6+7
20= 5+7+8
23= 9+8+6

6,7,8 are given to us, so our only options for numbers could be:
3,4,5,9
The only way to make 23 with single digit numbers is : 6,8,9
Since we know we have 9, we cant have 3... Plus we know that 7 flipped to a 9)

6=>5
7=>9
8=>4
