Start off with something simple, or even a question. If he doesn't respond or responds coldly, then part ways. If he responds nicely, build up your conversations.

I think you should look at your own motivation. It sounds like you are about as opposite as two people are likely to get. Now that you have considered why you want to talk with this guy and you still think making the move is OK, try this. Just say "Hi", and maybe "How are you?". But don't push the conversation. The next day the same thing and keep that up for three or four days. The next day ask about something in the class. Make the question open ended and select it to allow for a short answer or a long one. That should tell you whether he is conversant or not. Just nibble at him. In a week or two he will either shut down or start coming out of his shell.

I know the type he may be. I am a bit mixed up myself. Sometimes gregarious and sometimes very very private.

Just take it easy, go lightly and let him make the first "serious" move toward communication. If he opts not to in a couple of weeks, look for another person with whom to spend your time.

Smile at him - see how he responds. Ask him something related to the class you're taking. See how he responds. If he's really shy and wants to meet people, he might be reluctant at first, trust and all, but if he really is interested in making friends and such - he'll open up. Otherwise, you'll know and won't wonder anymore.

Start a conversation! What have you got to lose? Don't worry about him looking kinda mad. When my husband's face is relaxed and has no expression, he looks mad. It doesn't mean anything.

You could be starting a great friendship! Good luck!

yes, most definetely try to talk to him. It might not work out (ie. he may just walk off) but at least you tried to include him, and you never know, you might make a new friend. Hope that helps! :)
