Because the letter "F" is a soft consonant sound "fffff" and the letter "G" is a hard consonant sound "guh". If you tried to make the F a hard sound the word would sound like "Fud" (almost like saying fudge) and if you tried to make the the G a soft sound, the word would sound like "Ghooood" (almost like saying cool but with a d - coooood).
So it's really a matter of pronunciation.
