its not just that. when a famous (or not so famous) band comes out with a new song, it is OVERPLAYED!!! and ppl get real tired of it an the artist real quick. so its hard for them to make more than 5 "good" "big" hits...

C'mon, there've been one/two/three hit wonders for as long as there's been radio. How many "hits" did Boston have? What about the Doobie Brothers? Chuck Berry? Pink Floyd? Santana? Not to discount their talents, but what I'm saying is if you're a fan, you own their albums and you listen to them. And if you're not, then you just hear a few of their songs on the radio. If we take things out of the rock arena and go into pop, things get even worse.
Just because only a few tracks get radio love doesn't mean that the band is less good to their fan base, less creative, less good as musicians. A good contemporary example is The Darkness' first album. It's a good album overall, but radio only played about two tracks.
Blame radio, for it's not necessarily a decline in talent. Noone would dispute that Rush are ranked in the "Great Classic Rock Bands" category. However, only a small fraction of their work has ever gotten tons of spins. In fact, unless you happen to follow info on them, you'd think they stopped making music ages ago (just basing things on their radio heyday). But, in fact, they've been consistently making music and touring for almost 40 years now.
As with everything else in life, there are cycles. And maybe Good Charlotte, All American Rejects, and Hoobastank were just the flavors of those months. Of the three listed, I can only comment on two (since I'm not really a Hoobastank fan). And those two are very similar stylistically. So, it would be understandable if the music industry just chose to move on and find the next best thing instead of playing EVERYTHING that they put out. Green Day's Kerplunk! is getting more love today than it did when it first hit the shelves. And though I'm sure Dookie sold alright when it was first released it, too, is no doubt selling once again as well. Why? Because they're the new flavour. Well, now their time is again passing, but I think you get what I'm saying.

The bands are all prefabricated by record companies. They put out those songs, sell tons of records, and then go into hiding.
