My car hesitates at stop lights , around corners and in reverse, when I accerate it has to kick up RPMs way high to switch gear.
Its an automatic. Does it sound like the transmission is going bad.
Its a 2001 sunfire with 130,000 miles on it . I bought it in 2004 , it had 100,000 miles on it. I payed $5,300 when I bought it and put $2,000 into a new engine for it. Engine might have 70,000 miles.
How much would it probably cost to have a new transmission put in and would it be worth spending that much on this car?

You paid 5,300 bucks for a 3 year old sunfire with 100,000 miles on it???? Then put 2,000 bucks into it? Where do I begin??? Your money's lost. Get rid of that car before it gets you stranded on a lonely road on a dark night. Since you seem to have money to burn, spend some on a new car! I don't mean to be harsh, but you've gotten yourself into a situation where you have a money pit which will never be right, no matter how much you put into it. One slant on the law of diminishing returns.

I sounds like a coil problem. First of get a tune up on the car. Then all try just getting the transmission fluid and filter changed. Go with the easiest and less expensive things first. This may fix the problem. At this point considering the age and mileage showing on the car. You don't want to put and more big money in this car. A re-built transmission is between $700.-1,000.

Your Trans. is probably going bad.....However it might be your comp. which tells it when to shift and many other things with your transmission. So your cost really might not be as bad as u think. It is costly to remove and install your trans. you will be looking at somewhere around $1,000 on labor alone depending on where you live. It is your call on whether it is worth having done. However if you are required to change out your transmission then go to a junkyard or a transmission repair shop and they will have a used transmission if you don't want to spend the money on a new one....since they only cost about $2,250 NEW

Sounds like the "kickdown" cable is sticking.

It's a cable that goes to the throttle linkage so when you give it a lot of gas, the transmission "kicksdown" to the next lower gear for more acceleration.

If it's not the cable type, there is a vacuum pot on the side of the transmission that does the same thing. However this type uses vacuum from your engine to control the trans.

Either way, it should be a simple fix.

Before anything check the transmission fluid level; Make sure the car is running when you do. Also, changing the transmission oil filter/oil might help. Pick at the cheap stuff, see if it's an easy fix.

Yes, the 1st gear clutches sound like they are shot. They are also used in reverse. You are looking at $$$ for an overhauled transmission. I wouldn't go used because of the age of the car.
If you do the work yourself, you still pay $1200+ for the rebuilt / exchange.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings...

hello. um, well i'd have to agree with the other reader, that sounds like a lot of money to pay for it in th e ffirst place, thats balot of miles
it could be a s simple as a tranny kit or there could be a new tranny in your future, or as simple as a fluid check, do that with the motor running in neutral, tires blocked, at warm idle,
good luck
