Why is it called a pair of pants if you only get one?

an unidentified flying object is called that because it does not fall into any known flying object criteria (airplanes, helicopters, etc.)

a pair of pants are called that because of their root, pantaloons, which you could have one of, so a pair of pantaloons would cover two legs.
