Bought my niece a laptop(used). Came with a wificard. Please list step by step how to make this thing work. Do I need to enter info like you do for a dialup internet connection or something? Her mom cannot afford high speed, and right now they don't even have a phone (got turned off - parents getting divorced, yada, yada) so I can't get her dialup even. What exactly do I have to do? It said something about Odyssey. There's no instructions really even on the cd. She can't wait to use her computer.
It's a Compaq Armada M700 PIII. I had 325 or 350 memory(ram?) installed because it only had 128 in it originally. Nero? dvd-cdrw.
Thanks. Really appreciate some help. Sure is disappointing to have something new you can't use.

Dear Aunt, I have pasted below a URL for you to see what Wi-fi is and what it does. However, I am sorry to tell you that there is no way to connect to the Internet through Wi-fi unless the laptop is part of a wireless network. So, you will need to get your niece connected through dial-up , DSL or cable. Or if you have your own wireless network, you could add her laptop to your network.

I wish I could be of more help.

The WiFi card in your niece's computer will do nothing unless there is a wireless network to connect to (in which case it will point that fact out and give the option to connect -- it's almost automatic). If she is lucky, one of her neighbors may have a wireless network that she can piggyback onto. If she is not so lucky, she may have to go to a public WiFi hotspot. In the U.S., university libraries often have free WiFi access; so do Panera restaurants and Apple stores, among others. See http://www.jiwire.com for a directory of WiFi access points.

When your niece has more money, she will be able to buy a wireless router for about US$50 and set up a wireless network of her own.

If you need detailed instructions, look in the operating system's help text (assuming you're using Windows, go to Start | Help & Support, and search for "wireless network" or some such).

As one of the legion of used-computer owners this story is familiar 2 me. No instruction books, & no help from stores - even ones that sell the same brand ( Apple used mostly). OK, can U get any help online from friend or library / cyber cafe? Look up the make / brand & model. Also look for Computer user groups for it and info on Wifi. U may get access 2 InterNet if not @ home then library or places like book stores, cyber cafe. It just might work out of the box.
