A hippie was a trendy young person in the 60s who believed in free love and freedom from work. A tree hugger is an environmentalist who doesn't want trees cut down to build shopping malls or housing developments. The terms may overlap, certainly aren't mutually exclusive, but are not synonyms.

A big difference.
I grew up during the 60's and 70's in southern California. I am a major conservative democrat but when I was 18-21, I was a village idiot believing in love, peace and drugs, sex and rock and roll. Part of me is still a Birkenstock, a laid back personality but I am definitely not into this way left wing do nothing but cause problems mentality. Tree huggers don't offer solutions. They just add to the problems. Hippies had a cause. They worked toward their cause with convictions.
