It depends. Chameleons are the highest maintenance that i have found; but Iguanas and Monitors have some attitude issues and grow big fairly fast; so you have to constantly be upgrading their habitat.

I would say an iguana. While they have the heat and UV issues that many other diurnal lizards have, their food is a bit more complicated. You can't just go to the store and buy a bunch of vegetables and expect to give your iggy a balanced diet. They need a variety, but there are a few vegetables that you really have to limit to avoid health problems. It takes quite a bit of research and keeping up with new findings in order to be able to make sure all their nutritional needs are met. Caging is another headache since they get so big and need so much room. They have major attitude problems, especially during breeding season, and I don't know of any other reptile that poop paints!

Iguanas are the hardest. The reason they are the hardest is because they are the most intelligent. They have the most individuality and differentiate from one to another on their personal preferences. They are also the best if you raise them right.
Owner of a 4 year old, 6 foot long, male green iguana.
Previous owner of a rock python, 2 water dragons, burmese python, and a chameleon.

It varies, and it also depends on what you mean by hard to raise. Some species are very fragile and need very specific conditions, and some require a lot of time, space, energy, $$, etc... Generally speaking tropical reptiles have stricter environmental requirements, while desert animals are less sensitive and easier to care for.

The lizards tend to be the hardest. Temperature control, feeding, bedding, lighting all have to be just right or they will not make it. Have had the most trouble with Monitor lizards. My beardies were great and the iguana's were easy! Snakes seem to do well as long as they are fed and kept warm.

i've heard that the chinese water dragon is hard to raise. the personalities are wonderful, it's just they require so much care.
they are blind or something along that lines. what they will do is run into the glass over and over, making their noses sore. so you have to put tape a few inches up the cage so they will stop doing so. there are also other factors that play into this. i work with a lady that owns a water dragon. you have to have patients, love, and a very caring personality for these guys.
