Well Cash was a great singer.he knew nothing about play the guitar other then what he was taught.. But Jimi was a pioneer in guitar playing and he has inspired the best guitar players of all time! Hendrix did things with a guitar that no other performer has ever done ...so there is no comparison...Cash was a singer and nothing more Hendrix was an artist and a creator he not only wrote his music and songs... he created a whole new style of music. Cash was just like any other country singer. Just a Little more popular...but Hendrix was 1000000 times more famous and led a revolution in music

What a question! I wouldn't have believed it was possible to talk about too such different musicians in the same forum.
Cash was the expert of KISS (keep it simple, stupid!) He did a lot with just the basics. As some others mentioned, he didn't do anything different from all the other country musicians of the time. He had a very distinctive voice and could sort of sing but not very well. His lyrics are very popular, though he didn't write that many of his own hits!
Hendrix was the true creative genius and expanded guitar playing, rock/funk/soul music way beyond what people thought was possible. His song writing skills were good, but he wasn't that great of a vocalist. His songs weren't as popular as Cash's in the end because they are complex, hard to sing and difficult to re-create musically. But Hendrix was after the over-all creation, with more attention to the music and stretching the limits. People who are not as talented as he have a hard time reproducing it.
I actually liked them both. As a musician, I played more of Cash's music-- because I could.

Hard to make a comparison, Hendrix was definitely a better guitarist while Cash was popular at his kind of music.

Both were talented individuals. Hendrix was a phenomenal guitarist. Cash excelled in the ballads and recitations. He was a good singer too. Both were unusal and unique.

for their time i beleive they are innovative, but much more has come out after that.
I really don't think anyone can rival Cash's song writting, but hendrix is old news now, even J Mascis showed more potential in the 90's then hendrix did in his career. It's just the whole 60's penomenom
