Oh, oh, pick the expert to answer this question. Pick me, pick me, damnit!
Anyways, EMO is short for EMOtional music. Musicians such as punkish Green Day, Hawthorne Heights, Good Charlotte, or Dashboard Confessional are considered EMO. Emo kids are usually depressed most of the time and use music and poetry to express they way they feel. They wear tight, type of vintage kind of clothes, skater type shoes, and fitting pants. They usually cut their hair short and swipe their bangs to the side.
Of all, I would know what Emo is.

You're not at risk of sounding stupid, you're at risk of sounding repetetive. Someone asks this question every 10 minutes on here...type "emo" in the search box up there and you'll get a huge amount of answers.

Emo is not really emotional music, or all music would qualify as emotional. Emo was an emotional derivative of the punk genre. It's fast paced music, usually screamed to. I'm not an emo expert...

Emo is short for emotional. Emo type music is usually teen/angst/punk with a very high pitched lead vocal screaming about love and loss and relationship stuff. Some people hate it.. I can get into it.. but I like screamo better.. but thats a whole other question. =)

emo can be defined in 3 different ways.
emo music - type a of music in today's time which shows feelings and emotions such as heartbreak, death, lonliness, suffering, hatred, or love. basically every kind of music on the planet.
emo style - tight jeans, long hair usually covering the eyes and different colors, snake bites or just general piercings on the face, and tight band shirts.
emo... tional - sad, lonley, apathetic, hates life, wants to die, yadda yadda.

an emo person is very emo-tional.. they have a lot of feelings and show it usualy they are going through hard times and are very sad and depressed also they usually wear alot of eyeliner. And some times they end up cutting themselves

It is a shortened word for the genre also known as "Emotional Hardcore". A genre said to be created by Weezer in their album 'Pinkerton'...the first and last great album in that catagory. It has since become a genre for middle class high school kids full of supposed angst.
