These problems look as though they need factoring.
They are the difference between two squares.

Definition : a^2 - b^2 = (a - b)(a + b)
Multiply out the right-hand side to see that this is true.
So you just take the square root of each term.

y^2 - 7 = y^2 - [sqrt(7)]^2 = [ y - sqrt(7) ] [ y + sqrt(7) ]

z^2 - 36 = z^2 - 6^2 = (z - 6)(z + 6)
