How do door Strikers work?

Just purchased a 1997 Chevy Cavalier, with keyless shaved doors. The doors will not respond to the remote door opener. The solinoid does work, but cant get power to it. Does anyone know how a door striker works, or where I can find a wiring diagram to look at?

check the door jamb contacts.Are they clean tight and bright?
