I don't mind tipping at all, but I think a jar by the register with a sign on it saying "tips" is very very tacky.

If they are really nice I guess you should tip them, although at the Starbucks near me they are always friendly, but I never tip. I have never seen anyone tip in a coffee house or Starbucks.
I would tip at Starbucks if they actually lowered the price of a "tall" (small) coffee, which in most places is the price of a large. Baristas get paid a decent amount of money, always above min. wage. A person who works in a restaurant, usually gets paid the standard pay in there state, because traditionally waiters and waitresses have made more money from tips.

I always tip a bartender, therefore I would always tip a barista. They are basically doing the same thing.

I don't tip people who make coffee. That's your job. How does your service go above and beyond?
I tip people that deserve it. Who go the extra mile to help me. For example, if I am staying at hotel, and the bellhop hails cabs in the snow, or pouring rain. And gives me his umbrella to make me more comfortable!
You have to something outside of your job description to earn a tip. That's the definition.

It's unnecessary, as they are on a pay scale at or above minimum wage. However, everyone likes extra money and I usually do tip just out of general kindness.

Just send the tip to me, the lawyer has already charged you twice as much as he or she should have!

Depends on what you ordered. If you ordered a $4.00 Cafe Mocha, no tip. If you ordered black coffee, tip.
But either way, if they are extraordinarily nice, tip them.

It depends.
If I like their service, I'll give a tip. If not, what would they expect?
