When my parents went to school in those days they had a one room school house with grades first through eighth. There were both boys and girls. The teachers were allowed to spank your bottoms with no questions asked. When you got home your parents spanked your bottom with no questions necessary. The teacher was always right and got the respect they deserved. They probably learned more in those years than some would learn now with a college education.

Schools were still segregated by race in 1939, and sometimes by gender. This was especially true in the south, where black students were often in schools without heat or electricity. It also wasn't unusual for children to drop out of school before high school.
