It has to be the center as we can see the Moon and Sun Revolve around the Earth. This why they rise in the East and set in the West, easy observation that anyone can see.

some of the answers that were submitted are correct,but what was not included was how it seemed at that time that the stars, galaxies and planetary objects as well as comets, made it seem that the earth was the center of the universe. the universe is in a constant state of motion, it just takes us on earth to see it unfold.
i would recommend to you and all that are willing, to join a Astronomy club, you can learn to use the different types of telescopes and learn a little first hand knowledge of the hows and whys of what is going on in this little spot of the universe that we occupy.

Because from their ego-centric perspective, all the stars seemed to be revolving around the earth, and the only two large 'heavenly' bodies we were very familiar with (the sun and moon) seemed to them to be circling only the earth.

The sun appearing and disappearing at the horizons make it seems to be revolving around the Earth.

The eclipses could also add to the misconception.
