I often need extremely hot water to shave properly( iam using the shick quattro since after shaving with the gilette fusion, I was left with razor bumps)or my face will end up being cut up.
this afternoon i was shaving and i wasn't able to get a good enough shave since i only have warm water and ended up opening up old shaving wounds.

any ideas on how to get the best shave?

thanks.

I used to get those bumps too, and I had an idea, I now shave in the shower and the constant steam seems to have gotten rid of those unsightly bumps.

As an added bonus no more worrying about left over shaving cream around the ears LOL.

The ideal way to shave starts with a hot water washcloth applied to the beard to soften the hairs. Than apply the shave foam or gel and work it in well with the fingertips. You should shave in a downward motion, with the direction of the hair growth and not upwards against it. This prevents you cutting the hair on an angle and leaving it beneath the skin level to ingrow. That's the cause of the razor bumps/razor rash you describe. You are shaving a bit too closely and at the wrong angle. If you tend to develop ingrown whiskers, you really should stick to a single edge blade, and never use more than a double. After each swipe of the razor, rince the blade in hot running water. After you finish shaving, wash the rest of the cream off with warm water, and then a cold rinse to close the pores. This discourages bacteria getting in to cause bumps, zits and other obnoxious problems. Aftershave based on alcohol is not very skin friendly, and should not be applied to newly shaved skin. To prevent shave bumps, if you shave in the mornings, before you go to bed in the evening, lightly scrape the skin upwards, using your fingernails or an old credit card. This encourages any wayward hairs to come out , and not ingrow. This is the same motion you should use to work in the shave gel prior to shaving.
Warm water shaves and cold water shaves are hard because they usually cause skin drag. If you can tolerate using an electric razor, that might be a better option for times when hot water isn't available. Also, if you have shaving bumps, you should be sure to use a new razor, rather than recylcle a used one. Any bacteria and skin left on the old one can reinfect new areas. Never shave with a dull razor either. That guarentees a razor rash.
I know this because I had to teach the shaving class when I was in the miltary, to guys who developed a problem due to their shaving techniques and actually had "shaving waivers" while they healed. You may have to settle for a less than baby bottom smooth shave, at least until your skin toughens a bit, and some guys never can do one that close. Just depends on how easily you rash, and how curly your beard hairs are. If you have really curly hair, it will probably never be a good idea to shave that closely.

First and foremost, NEVER shave with COLD water. It sucks..... bad. Being in the Marine Corps, you have to shave everyday, so we always look for the best ways of doing things to ease our....hectic lives. Don't use cold water to shave. You might as well be doing a dry shave if you use cold water. What I have found is the best method, for me anyway, is to wet my face with either hot or cold water. The razor, however, place it under HOT running water. This heats up the blades and metal so it slides easier on your wet face. If you can, use shampoo as lather instead of soap or shaving cream. For some reason, it slides easier. If you have to do it in the morning, try and wait at least 20 minutes after waking up to shave. If in the afternoon, make sure you heat the blade under the water for a little longer. Make sure you splash water on your face before using the blade.
For a regular shave that lasts a couple hours (depending on how fast your hair grows) shave with the grey or downwards only. You could also go downwards and from the ear to the lips motion for a close shave. If you want the FULL and complete shave, go downward, ears to lips, and upward. This will leave you as smooth as a baby but it raises the risk of cuts.

Get an electric shaver then. I use Philishave, I am on the 3rd one. For its high end 3 headed model, the hairs stays inside the shaver and you can flush it out with water spray. The heads hardly needs replacement. You can shave with your eyes closed, in bed or upright.

if you got bumbs and razor blade kisses from shaving previously, you were doing it wrong...
i suggest that you shave in the same direction that your hair grows..
i gurantee you that you will have much less cuts and irritation..
